Halima was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee in May. The surgeon at Kano Community Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and She is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,200, and after what my insurance will pay we're still $850 short. my mother has been in and out of Kano Community Hospital since May. The doctors say osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without hip replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,200 is more than we can find. While we wait, Halima struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 6 weeks. During that time Halima won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $850 goes: • Hospital stay (4 nights): $340 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $380 • Post-operative medication: $35 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $45 • Travel and lodging for the family: $50 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.
