Hip replacement surgery for Cláudia: covering what insurance won't

After an aortic valve defect, Cláudia was cleared for hip replacement surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In January I was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect. My surgeon at Londrina General Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for March. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,650, and after what my employer's plan will pay, I'm still $1,150 short. Doctors at Londrina General Hospital told me an aortic valve defect will get worse without hip replacement surgery. I work as a security guard, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,650 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a security guard have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 7 weeks. I'll not be able to climb stairs during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $1,150 goes: • Hospital stay (2 nights): $760 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $185 • Post-operative medication: $100 • Travel and lodging for the family: $105 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to. - Cláudia

Sure. The biggest one is hospital stay (2 nights), $760. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Fair thing to want to know.
