Help Upendo keep her home - 5 months behind on rent

The loss of a second income left Upendo short on rent for 5 months; help us stay in our home.

After a sudden layoff at the call centre, Upendo fell 5 months behind on rent. Last Saturday a 10-day notice to quit was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $150. The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by August, the family must leave. There are 3 children at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. Upendo has started working evenings as a cleaner, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. The money will be paid directly to the landlord and I'll upload the receipt once it's done. Where the $150 goes: • Utilities in arrears: $35 • First month of rent as a buffer: $100 • Late fees and court costs: $15 Thanks for reading all this. - Ouma

Updates from Ouma

  1. Update from Nakuru: I made the first payment toward late fees and court costs. We're at 60% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  2. Wanted to say thank you properly. 54% funded and the plan for first month of rent as a buffer is now scheduled.
