Scarlett was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in June. The surgeon at Saint Matthew Hospital recommended spinal decompression surgery, and She is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $3,050, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $2,300 short. my mother has been in and out of Saint Matthew Hospital since June. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without spinal decompression surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $3,050 is more than we can find. While we wait, Scarlett struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 7 weeks. During that time Scarlett won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $2,300 goes: • Travel and lodging for the family: $135 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $1,750 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $415 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
