The Open Hands Pantry pantry in Port Harcourt is running low just as demand rises; $400 will stock it for 11 weeks.

Port Harcourt
Since 2019, our volunteer team has run Open Hands Pantry every Wednesday from the back of a borrowed garage. We started with 15 families, and now we feed 274 each week. Donations have dropped by about 30% this harvest gap, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 9 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Port Harcourt market and keep every receipt. Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week. I'll post the weekly shopping receipts and a photo of the shelves each Sunday. Where the $400 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $220 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $70 • Baby formula and diapers: $75 • Refrigeration and electricity: $35 Thank you so much.

I was going through a tough time and this person's support was invaluable. They didn't judge, just helped. That kind of genuine compassion is rare these days.

Perfect example of someone making a real difference. They took time out of their busy schedule to help me and never made me feel like a burden.

  • your post was clear and honest. I went through something like this 3 years ago and strangers helped me out. Greetings from Los Angeles!

    • Hang in there, Sani. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in.

      • More neighborhoods should do this. Thinking of Port Harcourt.
