Help Precious keep the Bread & Beans Kitchen pantry stocked
The Bread & Beans Kitchen pantry in Johannesburg is running low just as demand rises; $800 will stock it for 10 weeks.

Since 2023, our volunteer team has run Bread & Beans Kitchen every Tuesday from the back of a community center. We started with 22 families, and now we feed 251 each week.
Donations have dropped by about 60% this summer, while the line has grown every single week.
We rely on volunteers - 11 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Johannesburg market and keep every receipt.
Each $10 feeds a family of four for a week.
All of the funds go to groceries, fresh produce, and cold-storage costs.
Where the $800 goes:
• Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $450
• Fresh vegetables and fruit: $145
• Baby formula and diapers: $100
• Refrigeration and electricity: $105

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Precious.
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale) comes first ($450) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Good question.
