Kakamega
Since 2019, our volunteer team has run the Second Helping every Tuesday from the back of the old library basement. We started with 23 families, and now we feed 361 each week. Donations have dropped by about 60% this harvest gap, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 13 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Kakamega market and keep every receipt. Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week. All of the funds go to groceries, fresh produce, and cold-storage costs. Where the $550 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $340 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $80 • Baby formula and diapers: $80 • Refrigeration and electricity: $50 You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it. - Nabirye

  • It takes guts to ask. Well done. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. Greetings from Glendale.

    • is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Nabirye.

      • Sure. The biggest one is rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale), $340. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Fair thing to want to know.

    • keep going, Nabirye. Your post was clear and honest. Take care.

rooting for you, Nabirye. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money.

        • Keep going, Nabirye. More neighborhoods should do this. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Take care.

          • sending good thoughts, Nabirye. Hope you get there.
