In October I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My oncology team at Ottawa Regional Medical Center has planned 4 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in December. I was told to expect about 6 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 28, I worked as a construction supervisor until October, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Ottawa Regional Medical Center 5 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $8,000 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $4,300 • Scans and lab work: $870 • Transport to Ottawa Regional Medical Center: $640 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $620 • Household costs while unable to work: $1,570 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
