Lerato is the first person in the family to go to university. She is studying a nursing degree at the Stellenbosch Institute of Technology, and is two terms away from graduating. She has worked as a shop assistant to pay the way, but this term the hours were cut and there's an unpaid balance of $800.
The registrar has said Lerato can't enroll for the next term until the balance is cleared. Lerato has a first-class average, and a faculty supervisor has written in support.
Graduating means a stable job and the chance to support the younger siblings. Without enrolling this term Lerato would lose her place and scholarship eligibility.
Lerato isn't asking for a handout - She wants to finish what She started and help the next student.
The payment will go directly to the the Stellenbosch Institute of Technology bursar's office. I'll post the receipt.
Where the $800 goes:
• Exam and lab fees: $70
• Final term tuition: $280
• Outstanding tuition balance: $450
