After a sudden layoff at the hotel, Kwame fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Monday a notice to vacate was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $650. The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by September, the family must leave. There are a teenager still in school at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. Kwame has started working night deliveries, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. The money will be paid directly to the landlord and I'll upload the receipt once it's done. Where the $650 goes: • Rent arrears (3 months): $400 • Late fees and court costs: $30 • Utilities in arrears: $25 • First month of rent as a buffer: $195 Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.

  • How is Kwame doing now?

    • Hope you get there. I'm in nursing myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Thinking of Accra.

      • Thanks for sharing this, Ernestina. I was in a similar spot a few years ago and it did get better. Wish I lived closer to Gatineau so I could bring a meal. Take care!

        • I hope your landlord gives you a bit more time while this comes together. Don't be hard on yourself for asking. Love from Stockholm.
