After a sudden layoff at the bakery, Hesti fell 5 months behind on rent. Last Tuesday a 10-day notice to quit was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $550. The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by January, the family must leave. There are two young children at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. Hesti has started working night deliveries, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent. Where the $550 goes: • Late fees and court costs: $35 • Utilities in arrears: $55 • Rent arrears (5 months): $460 Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself. - Kartika
