Gemma was diagnosed with a deviated septum causing chronic infections in July. The surgeon at San Fernando Orthopedic Institute recommended hip replacement surgery, and She is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $750, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $600 short. my mother has been in and out of San Fernando Orthopedic Institute since July. The doctors say a deviated septum causing chronic infections will get worse without hip replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $750 is more than we can find. While we wait, Gemma struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 7 weeks. During that time Gemma won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $600 goes: • Post-operative medication: $65 • Hospital stay (2 nights): $390 • Physiotherapy sessions: $85 • Travel and lodging for the family: $60 Whatever you can give, even just sharing this page, means a lot. - Cecilia
