Francisco was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in July. The surgeon at Saint Matthew Hospital recommended hip replacement surgery, and He is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $3,800, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $3,050 short. my son has been in and out of Saint Matthew Hospital since July. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without hip replacement surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $3,800 is more than we can find. While we wait, Francisco struggles with daily life and can't climb stairs. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 3 weeks. During that time Francisco won't be able to climb stairs, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $3,050 goes: • Travel and lodging for the family: $240 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $300 • Hospital stay (3 nights): $2,510 Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly. - Iván

  • is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Francisco.

Sure. The biggest one is travel and lodging for the family, $240. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Thanks for looking so closely.
