After a sudden layoff at the hotel, Eyob fell 3 months behind on rent. Last Saturday a notice to vacate was taped to the door, and the amount owed is $400. The landlord was understanding for a while, but has now been clear: if the arrears aren't cleared by June, the family must leave. There are 4 children at home. Moving would mean new schools, a new commute and no deposit to put down anywhere else. Eyob has started working two part-time jobs, and is applying for help from local services, but nothing will arrive in time without the rest of the gap covered here. Funds go to the landlord and nowhere else. Any amount left over after the arrears are cleared will go toward next month's rent. Where the $400 goes: • Rent arrears (3 months): $230 • Late fees and court costs: $35 • Utilities in arrears: $25 • First month of rent as a buffer: $110 Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.
