Elias was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in August. The surgeon at Auckland University Hospital recommended laparoscopic endometriosis surgery, and He is scheduled for November. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $6,750, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $5,450 short. my husband has been in and out of Auckland University Hospital since August. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without laparoscopic endometriosis surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $6,750 is more than we can find. While we wait, Elias struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Elias won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $5,450 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,800 • Hospital stay (3 nights): $1,200 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $470 • Post-operative medication: $280 • Physiotherapy sessions: $310 • Travel and lodging for the family: $390 If you're reading this, thank you. - Emery

Good luck, Emery. This could happen to any of us. I went through something like this 10 years ago and strangers helped me out. All the best
