The gas account is 3 months behind. Andrew received a disconnection notice that says service will be cut off on September unless $900 is paid. He had never been late before an unexpected car repair.
Andrew called the provider and asked about a payment plan, but they need a down payment of $155 first, which isn't available.
The household includes a parent on oxygen therapy, and going through the cold months without gas isn't safe. We would also lose the ability to run the medical equipment at home.
