Adhiambo was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst in July. The surgeon at Nairobi Community Hospital recommended spinal decompression surgery, and She is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $2,050, and after what the public health scheme will pay we're still $1,650 short. my mother has been in and out of Nairobi Community Hospital since July. The doctors say a large ovarian cyst will get worse without spinal decompression surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $2,050 is more than we can find. While we wait, Adhiambo struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Adhiambo won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $1,650 goes: • Hospital stay (5 nights): $570 • Post-operative medication: $70 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $100 • Physiotherapy sessions: $130 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $780 If you can't give, please share this page. It does reach people. - Nafula

  • is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Adhiambo!

    • Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. hospital stay (5 nights) comes first ($570) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Good question.
