Achieng was diagnosed with endometriosis requiring surgery in January. The surgeon at Nairobi Community Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and She is scheduled for April. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $2,000, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $1,200 short. my mother has been in and out of Nairobi Community Hospital since January. The doctors say endometriosis requiring surgery will get worse without cataract surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $2,000 is more than we can find. While we wait, Achieng struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Achieng won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $1,200 goes: • Travel and lodging for the family: $80 • Hospital stay (3 nights): $250 • Post-operative medication: $75 • Physiotherapy sessions: $115 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $680 If you can't give, please share this page. It does reach people.
