In June I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My oncology team at the Leicester Oncology Institute has planned 6 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in September. I was told to expect about 12 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 34, I worked as a bank teller until June, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Leicester Oncology Institute 5 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $3,850 goes:
• Household costs while unable to work: $1,550
• Scans and lab work: $1,250
• Transport to the Leicester Oncology Institute: $750
• Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $300
