In September I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My oncology team at the Leeds Oncology Institute has planned 4 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in December. I was told to expect about 6 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 57, I worked as a hairdresser until September, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Leeds Oncology Institute 2 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $6,800 goes:
• Scans and lab work: $1,450
• Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $3,850
• Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $640
• Transport to the Leeds Oncology Institute: $860
