Ekurhuleni
Since 2022, our volunteer team has run Bread & Beans Kitchen every Sunday from the back of a community center. We started with 28 families, and now we feed 122 each week. Donations have dropped by about 53% this winter, while the line has grown every single week. We rely on volunteers - 20 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Ekurhuleni market and keep every receipt. Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week. All of the funds go to groceries, fresh produce, and cold-storage costs. Where the $700 goes: • Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $380 • Fresh vegetables and fruit: $185 • Baby formula and diapers: $105 • Refrigeration and electricity: $30 Glad we found this place. - Nalini

    • how is Nalini doing now?

      • Sending good thoughts. More neighborhoods should do this. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Greetings from Kassel.

        • wishing you peace, Nalini. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Wish I lived closer to Montréal so I could bring a meal.

          • So sorry you're going through this. Your post was clear and honest. I hope February is when things finally get easier.

            • Hope you get there. My father had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Blessings.
