Emergency hernia repair for Piper: covering what insurance won't

After an aortic valve defect, Piper was cleared for emergency hernia repair, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Piper was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in July. The surgeon at Auckland General Hospital recommended emergency hernia repair, and She is scheduled for September. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $7,500, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $5,900 short. my mother has been in and out of Auckland General Hospital since July. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without emergency hernia repair. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $7,500 is more than we can find. While we wait, Piper struggles with daily life and can't stand for more than ten minutes. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 4 weeks. During that time Piper won't be able to stand for more than ten minutes, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $5,900 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $1,850 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $2,600 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $380 • Post-operative medication: $330 • Physiotherapy sessions: $620 • Travel and lodging for the family: $120 I never thought I'd be the one asking, and I'm grateful for every bit of support. - Dylan

Best of luck. Shared it with a few friends. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Thinking of Auckland.
