Emergency hernia repair for Grace: covering what insurance won't
Grace needs emergency hernia repair at Nairobi General Hospital and the family is $700 short of the hospital's estimate.

Grace was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst in August. The surgeon at Nairobi General Hospital recommended emergency hernia repair, and She is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $880, and after what the government subsidy will pay we're still $700 short.
my mother has been in and out of Nairobi General Hospital since August. The doctors say a large ovarian cyst will get worse without emergency hernia repair. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $880 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Grace struggles with daily life and can't lift anything heavy. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Grace won't be able to lift anything heavy, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $700 goes:
• Travel and lodging for the family: $35
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $530
• Post-operative medication: $25
• Physiotherapy sessions: $70
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $40
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.

Thinking of you. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Take care.
