Elmarie's acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment fund

Elmarie is facing acute lymphoblastic leukemia and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

Johannesburg
Elmarie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July. The oncology team at Johannesburg Cancer Centre has planned 8 rounds of treatment, starting in October. She will be away from work for about 3 weeks. Elmarie is 58, worked as a farmer until July, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after her. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to Johannesburg Cancer Centre 5 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly. We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off her shoulders. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $2,550 goes: • Household costs while unable to work: $310 • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $2,150 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $90 You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it.

Updates from Francois

  1. Update from Johannesburg: we've booked the dates and paid the deposit. We're at 64% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($943 in total) the plan for household costs while unable to work is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. Quick update: $486 raised so far (19%). we've started the first stage. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.

    how is Elmarie doing now?

    • wishing you peace, Francois. Get well soon. All the best

      • Praying for you, Francois. This could happen to any of us. After 26 years in teaching I know how hard it's to ask for anything. All the best.

        • Wishing Elmarie a smooth procedure and a full recovery. Wish I lived closer to București so I could bring a meal.
