Dignity in old age: caring for Ruben
Ruben, 79, needs daily care to stay at home, and the family is raising $4,450 for a carer and medicines.

I'm caring for my father, who's 79. After the death of his spouse Ruben can no longer manage alone. A nursing home would cost far more than we have, and Ruben desperately wants to stay at home.
I work 25 hours a week and have cut back to look after him, but we need a part-time carer.
Ruben worked all of his life as a schoolteacher, and raised 4 children. Now we're trying to give some of that care back.
Medication, a hospital bed and a carer for six months will make a huge difference.
The carer will be employed through a registered agency and paid directly. I'll share the agency invoices.
Where the $4,450 goes:
• Medication and prescriptions: $600
• Hospital bed and mattress rental: $370
• Part-time carer (six months): $3,480
