Clean water and shade for Howrah: restoring the Baobab riverbank
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Baobab riverbank needs $400 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,599 views
The Baobab riverbank has been used as an informal dump for years. This June, 48 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 193 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $400 goes:
⢠Native saplings and stakes: $290
⢠Tools and protective gear: $75
⢠Signage and educational materials: $35
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

More neighborhoods should do this. Sent it to 3 people at work.

You're not alone, Urvashi. Your post was clear and honest. I went through something like this 12 years ago and strangers helped me out. All the best!
hope things get better soon. Shared this with my family. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. All the best.
Thanks for sharing this, Urvashi. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Blessings.
is there anything that isn't money that would help Urvashi?
It takes guts to ask. Well done. Please keep us posted. Thinking of Howrah.
Best of luck, Urvashi. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. Blessings.
