Clean water and shade for Ciudad de México: restoring the Union wetland
Volunteers are restoring the Union wetland in Ciudad de México; $600 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
Anywhere in the world552 views
The Union wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This August, 40 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 153 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $600 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $175
• Tools and protective gear: $135
• Waste removal and skip hire: $220
• Signage and educational materials: $70
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Lorenzo
Sure. The biggest one is native saplings and stakes, $175. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. It helps to be asked.
Thinking of you and your family. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier!
Can I help in a way that isn't money? I'm near Ciudad de México.
Thank you. If you're in Ciudad de México I'll say if something practical comes up. For now sharing this is great. Fair thing to want to know.
Wishing you peace. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. Love from Valencia.
Sending strength, Lorenzo. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Don't be hard on yourself for asking.
