Clean streets and rivers for Tokyo: restoring the Freedom hillside

A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom hillside needs $1,500 for saplings and equipment.

Tokyo
The Freedom hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This December, 58 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 44 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good. We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist. The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade. All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials. Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage. Where the $1,500 goes: • Tools and protective gear: $220 • Waste removal and skip hire: $590 • Native saplings and stakes: $690 Thanks for being kind about this.

Updates from Misaki

  1. Wanted to say thank you properly. 37% funded and I made the first payment toward waste removal and skip hire.

  2. Wanted to say thank you properly. 36% funded and the plan for waste removal and skip hire is now scheduled.

  3. Good news. Because of your gifts ($267 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Misaki.

It's all in the list in the story. tools and protective gear is the big one at $220, I'll post a receipt when it's paid. Ask me anything else.
