Clean streams for Austin: restoring the Jacaranda riverbank
Volunteers are restoring the Jacaranda riverbank in Austin; $2,600 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇺🇸 United States2,289 views
The Jacaranda riverbank has been used as an informal dump for years. This July, 56 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 126 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $2,600 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,300
• Tools and protective gear: $600
• Waste removal and skip hire: $600
• Signage and educational materials: $100
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Updates from José
Good news. Because of your gifts ($416 in total) I made the first payment toward waste removal and skip hire. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Sending strength, José. More neighborhoods should do this. All the best.
You're not alone, José. This could happen to any of us.
