Clean air and water for Yonkers: restoring the Liberty canal
Help us clean and replant the Liberty canal before the June planting window closes.
🇺🇸 Yonkers, New York, United States873 views
The Liberty canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This March, 63 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 194 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $2,050 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,100
• Tools and protective gear: $280
• Waste removal and skip hire: $510
• Signage and educational materials: $160
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
Updates from Naresh
Good news. Because of your gifts ($110 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.
Update from Yonkers: we've started the first stage. We're at 4% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.
