Clean air and water for Johannesburg: restoring the Freedom canal
Volunteers are restoring the Freedom canal in Johannesburg; $700 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇿🇦 South Africa1,075 views
The Freedom canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This March, 56 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 183 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $700 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $340
• Tools and protective gear: $115
• Waste removal and skip hire: $185
• Signage and educational materials: $60
You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it.

Sending good thoughts. Your post was clear and honest. I went through something like this 12 years ago and strangers helped me out. Thinking of Johannesburg.
Best of luck, Nalini. Great idea, hope you get there. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Blessings.
Wishing you peace, Nalini. Gave what I could, wish it was more. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Take care.
Take care, Nalini. This could happen to any of us. God bless
Hang in there, Nalini. This could happen to any of us. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Thinking of Johannesburg
