Cataract surgery for Okechukwu: covering what insurance won't

Okechukwu was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in July. The surgeon at Lagos University Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and He is scheduled for October. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,450, and after what the public health scheme will pay we're still $1,100 short.
my brother has been in and out of Lagos University Hospital since July. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without cataract surgery. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,450 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Okechukwu struggles with daily life and can't work a full shift. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. During that time Okechukwu won't be able to work a full shift, so the costs keep growing.
