Cataract surgery for Khadija: covering what insurance won't
After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Khadija was cleared for cataract surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In March I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Port Harcourt University Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for June. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $690, and after what my employer's plan will pay, I'm still $550 short.
Doctors at Port Harcourt University Hospital told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a school bus driver, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $690 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a school bus driver have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 10 weeks. I'll not be able to climb stairs during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $550 goes:
• Physiotherapy sessions: $70
• Post-operative medication: $25
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $330
• Travel and lodging for the family: $60
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $65
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Best of luck. I work in healthcare and wanted you to know people are on your side. The breakdown of costs made it easy to trust
Stay strong, Khadija. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did.
