Cataract surgery for Kemi: covering what insurance won't
After endometriosis requiring surgery, Kemi was cleared for cataract surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In April I was diagnosed with endometriosis requiring surgery. My surgeon at Abuja General Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for June. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,350, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $1,000 short.
Doctors at Abuja General Hospital told me endometriosis requiring surgery will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a taxi driver, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,350 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a taxi driver have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
The recovery period is expected to take about 8 weeks. I'll not be able to stand for more than ten minutes during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $1,000 goes:
• Post-operative medication: $40
• Hospital stay (4 nights): $520
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $440
I hope life is good to you.

Hang in there, Kemi. Hope the treatment goes smoothly and recovery is quick. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. Greetings from Athens.
