Cataract surgery for Jordan: covering what insurance won't

After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Jordan was cleared for cataract surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In November I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Christchurch Regional Medical Center recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for March. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $12,250, and after what our health plan will pay, I'm still $6,150 short. Doctors at Christchurch Regional Medical Center told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a security guard, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $12,250 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a security guard have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 3 weeks. I'll not be able to lift anything heavy during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,150 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $3,350 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $1,500 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $300 • Post-operative medication: $310 • Physiotherapy sessions: $440 • Travel and lodging for the family: $250 Thanks for being kind about this.
