After osteoarthritis in the right knee, Emeka was cleared for cataract surgery, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In August I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee. My surgeon at Enugu Orthopedic Institute recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for October. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,300, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $650 short. Doctors at Enugu Orthopedic Institute told me osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a hotel cleaner, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,300 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a hotel cleaner have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 12 weeks. I'll not be able to look after the children alone during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $650 goes: • Hospital stay (2 nights): $290 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $310 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $50 I hope life is good to you.

  • Thinking of you. Hope this works out for you. My neighbor in Moscow donated after I showed her your page. All the best.

    • Sending good thoughts. Hope you get there. After 16 years in farming I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Thinking of Enugu.

      • Hope it all works out, Emeka. I hope things turn around soon. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Take care
