ACL reconstruction for Douglas: covering what insurance won't
After a thyroid nodule that needs removal, Douglas was cleared for ACL reconstruction, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In January I was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule that needs removal. My surgeon at Oakland University Hospital recommended ACL reconstruction, and I have been placed on the schedule for March. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $6,000, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $3,600 short.
Doctors at Oakland University Hospital told me a thyroid nodule that needs removal will get worse without ACL reconstruction. I work as a warehouse packer, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $6,000 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a warehouse packer have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
The recovery period is expected to take about 3 weeks. I'll not be able to lift anything heavy during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $3,600 goes:
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $430
• Travel and lodging for the family: $410
• Hospital stay (5 nights): $2,760
Glad we found this place.
