ACL reconstruction for Donna: covering what insurance won't

A scheduled ACL reconstruction in October is out of reach without help covering $3,350 of the cost.

In August I was diagnosed with a hernia that has become strangulated. My surgeon at San Antonio General Hospital recommended ACL reconstruction, and I have been placed on the schedule for October. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $6,750, and after what our health plan will pay, I'm still $3,350 short. Doctors at San Antonio General Hospital told me a hernia that has become strangulated will get worse without ACL reconstruction. I work as a school bus driver, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $6,750 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a school bus driver have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Recovery is expected to take about 6 weeks. I'll not be able to look after the children alone during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $3,350 goes: • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $270 • Post-operative medication: $400 • Travel and lodging for the family: $520 • Physiotherapy sessions: $390 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $1,770 I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen. - Donna

  2. Thank you all. We're at 19% now ($623). I'm honestly stunned. we've booked the dates and paid the deposit.

  3. Good news. Because of your gifts ($788 in total) we've booked the dates and paid the deposit. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  • So sorry you're going through this, Donna. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. After 8 years in teaching I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Take care.

    • Can I help in a way that isn't money? I'm near San Antonio.

Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. pre-operative tests and imaging comes first ($270) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Happy to explain more.
