A solar-powered water pump: a volunteer-led effort in Rio de Janeiro

We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a solar-powered water pump - we need $950 for materials.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a solar-powered water pump. This year a group of 24 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Pioneer Primary School, but no funding. We have received donated timber, and the remaining cost is $950. It will serve about 449 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $950 goes: • Materials: $730 • Permits and inspections: $100 • Safety equipment and signage: $45 • Tools hire and delivery: $75 Thank you for reading my story.
