A repair café workshop: a volunteer-led effort in Oakland
We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a repair café workshop - we need $3,500 for materials.
🇺🇸 Oakland, California, United States1,527 views
For three years the neighborhood has asked for a repair café workshop. This year a group of 16 volunteers, including the parish youth group, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Freedom vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated timber, and the remaining cost is $3,500.
It will serve about 165 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in November and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $3,500 goes:
• Materials: $2,400
• Permits and inspections: $300
• Safety equipment and signage: $420
• Tools hire and delivery: $380
Glad we found this place.
