A playground: a volunteer-led effort in Kolkata
Volunteers in Kolkata are raising $650 for a playground at the Lotus vacant lot.
Anywhere in the world1,458 views
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a playground. This year a group of 25 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Lotus vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated tools, and the remaining cost is $650.
It will serve about 170 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in January and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $650 goes:
• Materials: $510
• Tools hire and delivery: $50
• Safety equipment and signage: $90

Rooting for you, Swapna. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Thinking of Kolkata.
Take care. Gave what I could, wish it was more. I went through something like this 10 years ago and strangers helped me out. God bless.
