A partial thyroidectomy for Sandra: covering what insurance won't

Sandra needs a partial thyroidectomy at Saint Catherine Hospital and the family is $400 short of the hospital's estimate.

Sandra was diagnosed with a deviated septum causing chronic infections in September. The surgeon at Saint Catherine Hospital recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and She is scheduled for November. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $530, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $400 short. my sister has been in and out of Saint Catherine Hospital since September. The doctors say a deviated septum causing chronic infections will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $530 is more than we can find. While we wait, Sandra struggles with daily life and can't walk without help. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 12 weeks. During that time Sandra won't be able to walk without help, so the costs keep growing. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $400 goes: • Post-operative medication: $50 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $70 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $280 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Updates from Francis

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($53 in total) the plan for pre-operative tests and imaging is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  2. Update from Accra: the plan for pre-operative tests and imaging is now scheduled. We're at 13% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.
