A partial thyroidectomy for Pauline: covering what insurance won't
After a large ovarian cyst, Pauline was cleared for a partial thyroidectomy, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In August I was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. My surgeon at Rennes Orthopedic Institute recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and I have been placed on the schedule for October. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $12,000, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $6,050 short.
Doctors at Rennes Orthopedic Institute told me a large ovarian cyst will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. I work as a warehouse packer, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $12,000 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a warehouse packer have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
The recovery period is expected to take about 10 weeks. I'll not be able to stand for more than ten minutes during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.

• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $300
• Post-operative medication: $220
