A partial thyroidectomy for Igor: covering what insurance won't

A scheduled a partial thyroidectomy in August is out of reach without help covering $3,200 of the cost.

In May I was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule that needs removal. My surgeon at Katowice University Hospital recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and I have been placed on the schedule for August. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $6,500, and after what our health plan will pay, I'm still $3,200 short. Doctors at Katowice University Hospital told me a thyroid nodule that needs removal will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. I work as a seamstress, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $6,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a seamstress have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 10 weeks. I'll not be able to climb stairs during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $3,200 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $1,600 • Travel and lodging for the family: $170 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $1,300 • Post-operative medication: $130 With deep gratitude, Igor
