A partial thyroidectomy for Horst: covering what insurance won't
After severe cataracts in both eyes, Horst was cleared for a partial thyroidectomy, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Horst was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes in June. The surgeon at Dortmund Regional Medical Center recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and He is scheduled for August. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $3,050, and after what my insurance will pay we're still $2,300 short.
my son has been in and out of Dortmund Regional Medical Center since June. The doctors say severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $3,050 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Horst struggles with daily life and can't drive. His family has taken turns caring for him, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Horst won't be able to drive, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $2,300 goes:
• Hospital stay (5 nights): $1,600
• Physiotherapy sessions: $500
• Post-operative medication: $200
