A partial thyroidectomy for Anika: covering what insurance won't
After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Anika was cleared for a partial thyroidectomy, but the bill is more than we can manage.

Anika was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly in July. The surgeon at Dhaka University Hospital recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and She is scheduled for September. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $800, and after what the government subsidy will pay we're still $400 short.
my daughter has been in and out of Dhaka University Hospital since July. The doctors say a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $800 is more than we can find.
While we wait, Anika struggles with daily life and can't climb stairs. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there.
The recovery period is expected to take about 8 weeks. During that time Anika won't be able to climb stairs, so the costs keep growing.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $400 goes:
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $35
• Post-operative medication: $45
• Travel and lodging for the family: $30
• Physiotherapy sessions: $45
• Hospital stay (4 nights): $245
