A fresh start in Embakasi: help the Yusuf family resettle

After fleeing Iraq, the Yusuf family has arrived in Embakasi with little more than their documents. They need help with a deposit, furniture and the first months.

Embakasi
My family left Iraq 6 months ago after we were targeted for our work. We spent time in a camp before we were resettled in Embakasi. We're a family of six and we're safe, but we arrived with very little. Our resettlement agency has provided 4 months of rent, and that support ends in February. I was a teacher in Iraq, and I'm studying the language every evening. Our daughter and son have started school and are doing well. We want nothing more than to be self-sufficient. This fund will help us through the first six months. All purchases will be documented and photos shared (with the family's consent). Where the $500 goes: • Rent deposit and first month: $250 • Winter clothing and school supplies: $150 • Language classes and bus passes: $40 • Phone and internet for school and job search: $60 I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.

  • Hang in there, Njoroge. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. My husband and I read this together. All the best.

    • I hope things turn around soon. After 10 years in accounting I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Greetings from Santos.

      • Good luck, Njoroge. It takes guts to ask. Well done. I'm in construction myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Take care

        • Thinking of you, Njoroge. It takes guts to ask. Well done. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. All the best

          • Thinking of you and your family. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Sent it to 14 people at work. All the best
