A free library and reading room for the Union vacant lot: help our neighbors in Bronx
Volunteers in Bronx are raising $1,650 for a free library and reading room at the Union vacant lot.
Anywhere in the world244 views
For three years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 17 volunteers, including two retired carpenters, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Union vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated soil and plants, and the remaining cost is $1,650.
It will serve about 266 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in August and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $1,650 goes:
• Materials: $980
• Permits and inspections: $115
• Safety equipment and signage: $180
• Tools hire and delivery: $375
If you can't give, please share this page. It does reach people.

Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. My neighbor in Istanbul donated after I showed her your page. Love from Istanbul!
Gave what I could, wish it was more. We're a small family in Casablanca but we're thinking of you
Keep going. Your post was clear and honest. Thinking of Bronx.
