A craniotomy for Patrick: covering what insurance won't

After a hip fracture that never healed properly, Patrick was cleared for a craniotomy, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In January I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Ottawa Regional Medical Center recommended a craniotomy, and I have been placed on the schedule for April. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $8,500, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $6,450 short. Doctors at Ottawa Regional Medical Center told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without a craniotomy. I work as a hotel cleaner, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $8,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a hotel cleaner have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Recovery is expected to take about 5 weeks. I'll not be able to climb stairs during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $6,450 goes: • Post-operative medication: $200 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $2,950 • Travel and lodging for the family: $280 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,650 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $370 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure. - Patrick

Hope you get there. Wish I lived closer to Nakhon Ratchasima so I could bring a meal.

    • Thinking of you. Gave what I could, wish it was more. My neighbor in Entebbe donated after I showed her your page.

      • Hang in there, Patrick. Hope the treatment goes smoothly and recovery is quick. I went through something like this 12 years ago and strangers helped me out. All the best

        • Rooting for you. This could happen to any of us. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. Greetings from Warangal.

Take care, Patrick. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. Blessings

            • Praying for you. I hope things turn around soon. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. All the best.
