A community garden: a volunteer-led effort in Chicago
Volunteers in Chicago are raising $2,350 for a community garden at the Lotus health centre yard.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a community garden. This year a group of 17 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Lotus health centre yard, but no funding.
We have received donated a pump, and the remaining cost is $2,350.
It will serve about 118 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in February and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $2,350 goes:
• Materials: $1,300
• Permits and inspections: $410
• Safety equipment and signage: $250
• Tools hire and delivery: $390
